Ep. 177 – Why Therapy Might Not Work for Your Marriage – Tough Topic Series with Dr. Barbara

Precious and Beloved Friend,
Today on the Whole Life Podcast, we talk about something dicey! Therapy may not work for your marriage. You heard me right, the Licensed Psychologist and Trauma Specialist told you that therapy may not work for you and your partner. Fostering asymmetrical growth in a marriage through individual counseling can be damaging for your partnership. If one spouse receives individual counseling solely to heal the marital problems, the other spouse is left without the tools and resources to grow. Couples counseling allows the couple to grow together in secure attachment.
I share deeper about other caveats of married populations that may not be suited for individual therapy. Situations such as abuse or active addiction within a spouse involve more intensive couples treatment options, or safety measures. I give you components on the pursuer/withdrawer relationships that can help reshape your marriage early when understood.
Couples therapy fails when one spouse wants to win. Coming into couples counseling with empathy and understanding brings about a fresh new perspective and attachment to marital wounds.
